Florence Chadwick, an American swimmer, set many international records, including breaking a standing record for swimming the English Channel between England and France. On July 4, 1952, she became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the Catalina Channel, from Catalina Island to the California coast.

On her first attempt, the ocean was ice cold. The fog was so thick that Chadwick could hardly see the support boats following her. Sharks prowled around her and the support crew fired rifle shots to drive them away several times. After 15 hours and 55 minutes, she felt she couldn’t go on. She asked to be taken out of the water. The thing she didn’t know was that there was only a half of a mile to go. Chadwick told a reporter, I’m not excusing myself, but if I could have seen land, I know I could have made it.

How many times does the fog of life get so thick we can’t see the finish line? What if, like Florence Chadwick, there is only half of a mile to go and you give up?

Unfortunately, I think it happens all too often. Life is busy and the fog gets thick. We lose sight of our vision, our goals…our destiny. Then we give up on it. Sometimes, we give up without even knowing it.

2020 is upon us. I challenge you to make it a year in which you focus on your vision being 20/20. What do you need to do to remove the fog and see the finish line?

  • Do you need to set goals? Revisit your goals?
  • Do you need to motivate yourself? Revitalize yourself?
  • Do you need a plan or someone to hold you accountable?
  • Do you need a roadmap to get you where you want to go?
  • Do you need a life vest to keep you floating when the world is trying to sink you?
  • Do you need a plan for not if, but when you fail?

What do you need to remove the fog that always settles down on your dreams and goals? Name it!

Envision the finish line. What does it look like? What sounds do you hear? What does it feel like to cross it?

There is only one thing standing between the here and now, and that half-mile. It is you.

Remember…The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same. —Colin R. Davis. If you truly want 20/20 vision in 2020, you need to a plan to remove the fog every mile along the way. So, for you, what’s next? Will you do it?
