The Real 80/20 Rule: Why Progress Beats Perfection

You’ve probably heard of the 80/20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle. It’s often used in business, health, finance, and productivity, suggesting that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts.
Whether or not the original principle applies to every area of life is up for debate. In fact, its origins had little to do with the way it’s commonly used today. Yet somehow, “80/20” has become the go-to formula for success.
But what if there’s a better way to think about it?
A Better 80/20 Rule
Recently, I came across a list that stopped me in my tracks:
- Health: 80% eating, 20% exercise
- Wealth: 80% habits, 20% math
- Communication: 80% listening, 20% speaking
- Learning: 80% understanding, 20% reading
- Achievement: 80% doing, 20% dreaming
- Happiness: 80% purpose, 20% fun
- Relationships: 80% giving, 20% receiving
- Growth: 80% persistence, 20% ideas
Now that’s an 80/20 rule worth remembering.
If you want better health, focus on what you consistently put into your body. If you want financial success, build habits that support wise decisions over time. If you want stronger relationships, spend more time giving than keeping score. If you want to grow, keep showing up—even when it’s difficult. These aren’t shortcuts. They’re reminders that lasting success is usually built on the simple things we do consistently.
The Problem With Chasing Perfection
Here’s where many of us get stuck.
Changing habits isn’t easy. Eating healthier isn’t easy. Saving more isn’t easy. Being more patient, listening better, or living with greater purpose isn’t easy either.
Most of us begin with enthusiasm. We commit to eating better—until our grandchild wants to share an ice cream cone. We decide to save more money—until an unexpected expense shows up. We promise ourselves we’ll exercise regularly—until life gets busy.
Then something unfortunate happens. We convince ourselves we’ve failed. Why do we assume one imperfect day erases weeks of progress? The truth is, success has never been about perfection. It’s about progress.
The Second 80/20 Rule
Here’s the 80/20 rule I wish more people embraced.
Imagine you set an important goal. Instead of expecting perfection, you achieve 80% of it. Some people would call that falling short. I call it winning.
Now reset your sights and tackle the remaining 20%. If you achieve 80% of what’s left, you’ve now reached 96% of your original goal.
Still not satisfied? Repeat the process one more time. Achieve 80% of the remaining 4%, and you’ve reached 99.2%. Not by being perfect. By refusing to quit.
Small, consistent improvements have a remarkable way of compounding over time—whether you’re improving your health, strengthening your relationships, growing your faith, building wealth, or preparing for retirement.
Purpose Over Perfection
Since 1989, our mission at Kennedy Financial Services has been to help people Live Life on Purpose™.
Notice what we don’t promise. We don’t promise perfection. Because perfection doesn’t exist.
What does exist is intentional progress. Making wise decisions. Adjusting when life changes. Learning from setbacks instead of being defined by them. Continuing to move forward, one step at a time.
Most people would gladly accept achieving 96% or even 99.2% of the goals that matter most in life. But none of that happens without taking the first step.
So, What’s Your 80/20?
Which area of your life deserves your attention right now?
Maybe it’s your health. Maybe it’s your finances. Maybe it’s your relationships. Maybe it’s your habits.
Choose one. Prioritize it. Ask for help if you need it. Create a plan. Stay consistent.
And remember this:
80% of zero is still zero.
The hardest part isn’t being perfect. It’s getting started.
